As part of a MS program in Environmental Geosciences at Queens College, I am developing field and laboratory protocols for an exploratory study of PFAS compounds in Jamaica Bay and their bioaccumulation in the diamond-backed terrapin. I am working with a team at York College and La Guardia Community College, led by Dr. Allison Brashears, to conduct an analysis of estuarine water and key species to understand the extent of pollution from CSO and groundwater discharge. With this study, we will help assess the extent of PFAS bioaccumulation in the Jamaica Bay ecosystem and suggest remediation pathways most impactful for the coastal system.
